I’ll be honest - 12 years ago when Katherine McPhee was on American Idol, I really fell for her. She’s beautiful, has a gorgeous voice and her performance of K. T. Turnstall’s
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree was one of the sexiest things I’ve ever seen on TV. So, when it was announced that she was going to take over as the lead of
Waitress, a show we had enjoyed last year with Sara Bareilles, I was ready to sign up. Carolyn, not being a McPhee fan, said no. So I was happy when Dan said it was a show he’d like to see. Carolyn took a night off and Dan and I went to see it.
This will never be a musical theater classic but it’s a fun show with some decent music. McPhee was great on the songs - especially on She Used to Be Mine where she brought the house down. It surprised me a little, having seen her on TV in several roles, that when she had to dig a little, her acting skills weren’t half bad. The comic relief couple were the same actors as when we saw this last year and were terrific, especially Christopher Fitzgerald. Zach’s LBJ, Steve Vinovich, played Joe with the right mix of gruffness and heart and I really like his one song - Take it From an Old Man.
As I said - not a classic but a thoroughly enjoyable evening of theater with a good score. A little bit of stretch but give it an 8.
