To the few of you who subscribe to this blog - I'm giving up.  I'll still right the posts but they'll go directly on Facebook.  I still can't figure out how to get the screwed up graphics to work so I've been manually posted them here and on Facebook.  Only 3 or 4 people are looking at these posts where, on Facebook, it's usually a hundred or so. If you're a friend on Facebook, you'll still see things there.  If not, sorry.  I may try another blogging service and see if I can solve the problem but, until then, FB only.

Bernhardt/Hamlet

Technically, this play was near perfect.  Magnificent sets that used the stage's turntable beautifully.  Lighting that was great at setting the mood.  And, the acting - just wow.  Janet McTeer as Bernhardt was incredible and, at least so far, the front-runner for the Best Actress Tony.

Teresa Rebeck's play was interesting.  Sarah Bernhardt was the darling of late 19th century Paris playing many of the important female parts in the canon of the day.  She was also a prototype for today's celebrity with a personal life that kept her in the news as much as her acting.  Bernhardt decides, in 1897, to take ignore gender and take on one of the most demanding roles in theater as Hamlet.  Quoting from the playbill, the play "explores the sacrifices necessary to shatter centuries of tradition, take on the untouchable and command one's own legacy."

I enjoyed this one but it was, for me at least, mostly about appreciating the craft on display.  The play was most interesting in the scenes from Hamlet.  Would love to see McTeer do that!

Really good but no match for the previous night's Ferryman.  An 8.
