To the few of you who subscribe to this blog - I'm giving up.  I'll still right the posts but they'll go directly on Facebook.  I still can't figure out how to get the screwed up graphics to work so I've been manually posted them here and on Facebook.  Only 3 or 4 people are looking at these posts where, on Facebook, it's usually a hundred or so. If you're a friend on Facebook, you'll still see things there.  If not, sorry.  I may try another blogging service and see if I can solve the problem but, until then, FB only.

Fabulation

A little behind so I'm going to post three reviews this afternoon and probably another one tonight.

Friday night, we headed to the Signature theater to see a production of Lynn Notage's Fabulation.  It's the story of a hard-driving black woman who walks away from her life and builds a very successful PR firm.  After 14 years, her husband drains the bank accounts and disappears so, overnight, everything is gone.  Things go downhill for her in a lot of ways but she rediscovers her family and, ultimately, herself.

This wasn't a favorite.  The story was pretty predictable and, for the most part, the acting wasn't the best we've seen.  Don't know whether this was intended as the first of a sequence of plays, but the ending was abrupt and unsatisfying.

Can only give this one a 5

Mean Girls

First — apologies that the same photo keeps popping up on Facebook.  It seems to have a mind of its own.  If anybody has advice on how to control the thumbnail when posting to FB from blogger, PM me. Tonight begins our serious stretch of theater with Mean Girls .  It’s a new musical based on the old movie of the same name.  Book (the script) was written by Tina Fey and the music by her husband, Jeff Richmond.  The plot is a pretty standard “life in high school” plot - new kid moves in and tries to bring down the evil queen bee of the high school becoming the evil queen be herself.  Everybody learns their lesson in the end for the big Kumbaya finale.  We seem to have the same reaction to this show as most friends who have seen it.  It was an enjoyable evening of theater that we don’t need to repeat.  The songs are catchy but ultimately unmemorable.  It’s a couple of hours later and, without referring to the Playbill, I can’t remember a si...

Tony Yazbek and Laura Osnes

We’re baaaack!  This time with our own place right in the heart of the theater district - 46th and 8th!  It’ll be really nice to get it set up the way we want and be able to leave stuff here.  I suspect we’ll be here more often for shorter trips.  Goal is to spend about four months a year here.  Still sometimes amazes me that, at our ages, we’ve started this whole new chapter in our lives but those of you (most of you?) who we’ve talked to about it know that we’re having a ball!  Oh, and the new apartment is only a few hundred steps from the Marquis Theatre where the signage for Tootsie  has gone up.  We saw it with a huge group of friends in Chicago a few weeks ago and it was wonderful.  Official Chicago opening night was this past Sunday and the reviewers were over the moon about the show! Atera

Have to honestly say that, after all my raving the other day, Per Se may have some serious competition.  Tonight, we took Dan down to Tribeca to a restaurant that we hadn’t tried before called Atera.  It’s a tiny place - a bar and one table - holding 16-20 people and they do two seatings a night at 6 and 9:30.  The kitchen is in the same room so you’re watching everything being prepared and, for the most part, finished right in front of you.  Other than giving them advance warning of the things you won’t eat, there aren’t any choices.  They just bring you food!  They’re known for their cutting edge technique and unexpected combinations of flavors.  We saw this right from the beginning when they brought us a tiny glass of juniper-laced ice and filled the glass with a lime foam - just delicious.  We knew we were in good hands.
